Clear Skies Newsletter

3 January 2025

Fellow stargazer,
First of all I would like to wish you all the best for 2025 with plenty of telescope time under clear, steady skies!

This week on the Clear Skies website saw a new Deep Sky Forum Object of the Week, new Webb Deep-Sky Society Objects of the Month, a new Astrotreff Object of the Month, a potential discovery and 2 new CSOG downloads.

Emission region Courtès 128 - "the Angelfish" in Orion

Posted on Deep Sky Forum as the nebula Sharpless 2-264, this is in fact a collection of nebulae so large it can rightly be called a 'region'. As a whole, it was first cataloged by Georges Courtès, hence the primary designation of Courtès 128.

I posted a reply on the forum, with historical information and describing individually designated parts of the region as included in nebula catalogs such as McDonald, Cederblad, Strohmeier, Simeis and Gaze-Shajn.

Page Update

Discoveries - 351 and further

While piecing together the observing guide for double star STTA66, one of the Webb Deep-Sky Society's Objects of the Month for January, I noticed something irregular 27 minutes of arc to the northwest of the double star.
Astronomy - Discoveries - 351 and further
As it turned out, these irregular nebulous wisps to the northeast of the known galaxy CAP 0543+25 are - to the best of my knowledge - not included in any catalog. I added it as nr. 358 to my list of potential discoveries.

Looking Up

Today, 3 January the Quadrantid meteor shower peaks. The zenithal hourly rate (ZHR) of this shower, with its radiant in the northern regions of the constellation of Boötes, can be quite high. For mid-northern hemisphere observers, the radiant is circumpolar, meaning it's above the horizon all night long.
