      Astrotrip

The week ahead I will be in northern France for what will hopefully be a week under the stars. If the skies cooperate, new observing blogs will follow soon.

I am no longer attending the Belgian star party Starnights due to pretty much a complete lack of interest from the organization and attendees for the 3 observing programs (120 objects) I created for the event and the CSOG philosophy behind it. These programs, that I posted 4 weeks ago and for which I spent a considerably amount of effort and time to create them, are getting download all right... but less than a handful by visitors from Belgium or the Netherlands. That unfortunately makes it clear that hardly anyone attending (if anyone at all) plans to use these or is even taking an interest in them. That plus my conviction that very few in the crowd will have a grasp of what I have to share, I have decided to not waste my time and money on it: I have better things to do.

Instead, I will make it to northern France a day and a half earlier. Together with my astrotrip buddies, that will be a very fun week regardless of the weather.

      CSOG Interim Update

As I wrote in earlier newsletters, the amount of observing I get to do and with that the blogs I may get to post, will determine when I can publish an interim update to CSOG. As a lot of CSOG changes and updates to existing content come from my own observing, I want to make sure I implement any changes I deem necessary before setting out to export and upload the thousands of updated files.

Since publication of CSOG 3.0 in November 2024, I added and updated > 5K unique observing guides. Including all mirrored editions, that's well over 20,000 files. On top of that, there are updated AstroPlanner planfiles and tour files that go with the guides.

      New editions

The interim update will bring 8 new editions:
      • Struve-Straka nebulae
      • Dorschner-Gürtler nebulae
      • Van den Bergh Reflection Nebulae
      • Rojkovskij-Kurchakov nebulae
      • Bernes Bright nebulae
      • Neckel-Staude nebulae
      • Peimbert-Bátiz & Peimbert-Costero planetary nebulae
      • Herschel Regions
The information in these new editions has been incorporated into existing editions where applicable.

As you see, this will be a huge update to CSOG, adding further unique content that cannot be found in any other publication. I am glad I will be able to release it less than a year since publication of CSOG 3.0.
