Gaze-Shajn Emission Nebulae

The fascinating Gaze-Shajn (and Simeis..?) catalog of emission nebula. Like the Parsamian Cometary Nebulae catalog, deemed lost to the general public for decades.

My sincere gratitude goes out to dr. Tigran Magakian of Byurakan Observatory.

The Gaze-Shajn catalog was completed on 1 March 1955, with participation of E.I. Iosko (Е. И. Иосько) and L.P. Metik (Л. П. Метик) and was published in the same year. That was the year after Vera Fedorovna Gaze and the year before Grigory Abramovich Shajn passed away.

I hope this article will contribute to their legacy and will help to give their discoveries and designations the credit that is long overdue.

The catalog was published with the intent to supersede, correct and amend four earlier publications by Gaze & Shajn for Simeis objects: 1950IzKry…6….3S, 1951IzKry...7...93G, 1952IzKry...9...52G and 1954IzKry..11…39G. Multiple individual Simeis objects were combined under single Gaze-Shajn designations. New objects were added.

The Gaze-Shajn & Simeis objects will be new editions for CSOG 2.5 and will be incorporated into existing content. This is expected to push back the release of the next edition by several months, but that will be worth it.

В последнем столбце даны обозначения туманностей: NGC, IC, наши старые номера с буквой $ (Симеиз) впереди [1, 2], W [4], Мi I и Мi II [6], Н [7, 8], МcD [9], Сеd [10], St [11].

Wilsin, Yerkes-McDonals, Lick, Victoria).

CATALOG OF EMISSION NEBULAE

V. F. Gaze, G. A. Shajn

This catalog is a revised summary of four previously published lists of nebulae, with some additions. In table. 1, in addition to the coordinates, are given: angular size, brightness, classification and old designations of nebulae (columns 6, 7, 8, 9): This list is less detailed than the previous (separate nearby nebulae or parts are often grouped here under one number). Notes are given separately at the end of table 1. Exciting stars are listed in table 2, links to images of different nebulae in table 3.

In recent years, the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory has published four lists of emission nebulae [1, 2]. Results of Observations Started at Simeis in 1949, published as observations accumulated, obtained on two fast cameras 450 and 640 mm. (F/1.4). Satisfactory field is small, about 3° in diameter. For these cameras, the scale is respectively 5.7' and 4.0' (in mm.). The images were taken on Eastman Kodak 103aE plates in combination with a KC5 red filter (transmission region approximately λ 6330 - λ 6600).

At the present time there is a need to give one summary list of nebulae, making it more convenient to use. In addition, this consolidated revised list contains a lot of new information.

In previous lists, we often over-detailed the designations of the nebulae. Now it seems more appropriate to give fewer numbers, bringing together, when possible, a few parts or nebulae. However, there may be different opinions on how far one can go in this regard.

Besides, the difficulty in cataloging nebulae is partly due to the presence of a noticeable emission background almost everywhere in very low galactic latitudes. This is clearly seen in the images of the Atlas of the observatory [3]. In particular, an almost solid background is revealed in Cygnus from 19h35m to 20h45m in α and from 32 to 48° in δ, as well as in Серheus from 22h0m to 23h15m in α and from +58 to 63° in δ. In earlier listings, some of the more visible features of this emission background were labeled as individual nebulae, but in the present summary list some of them are either omitted or entered as a field in the nearest, brighter individual nebulae. The list does is not claimed to be complete. The accessible part of the galactic belt was considered for the most part within ±10° in latitude. But this limit is far from being maintained, especially in winter hours. At 16h and 17h only a small number of pictures were taken. Due to the small scale, it was almost impossible to detect nebulae smaller than 0.5'-1.0'. The overwhelming majority of the pictures were taken only in red light. Partly in connection with the latter, a small number of nebulae may turn out to be reflective. Some nebulae in table 1 are marked as reflective or partially emissive. The plates used for the work have aged over time, and obtaining very faint nebulae became impossible.

The list of nebulae is presented in table 1 (page 16). This includes the nebulae from our four lists above, several new nebulae and a number of mostly very faint or small nebulae, which we found after the appearance of the recent Mount Wilson catalog [4]. This catalog was received in early 1954, when our small fourth list was practically out for print [2].

The first column of table 1 shows the current number in our consolidated list. The asterisk indicates a note at the end of table 1.

Columns 2 and 3 give α and δ for 1900, and in 4 and 5, respectively, the galactic latitude and longitude. In rare cases, the coordinates are given arbitrarily for the brighter part of the nebula. Position accuracy is about 1', sometimes the accuracy is less.

Column 6 lists the angular dimensions (approximately in two perpendicular directions to characterize the elongation of the nebula). The size is mostly determined inaccurately. If there is another field in addition to the nebula itself, or there is only one field, then the size is enclosed in square brackets.

Brightness. The brightness is given in the 7th column. For 20 nebulae, the brightness from one square minute of arc was determined by referencing out-of-focus images to the NPS polar sequence (red magnitude system). Our red values of m depend on the instrumental characteristics (in particular, on the spectral sensitivity of the plates and on the part of the spectrum that is passed through by the KC5 filter). The accuracy here is probably ±0.20m. For these nebulae, we had the opportunity to free mrfrom the influence of a continuous spectrum and obtain the corresponding value of  m [5].

Since the images were generally taken with a single exposure, by comparing all other nebulae with our "standard" nebulae, we could get a rough eye-estimate of the brightness. The accuracy here, of course, is very low, but the error hardly exceeds 0.5m. However, we do not give values, but figures indicating the probable limits: 1 - brighter than 9.5m; 2 - between 9.4m and 10.1m; 3 - between 10.0m and 10.7m;  4 - between 10.бm and 11.3m; 5 - between 11.2and 11.9m; 6 - between 11.8m and 12.5m; 7 - between 12.4m and 13.1m; 8 - fainter than 13.0m.

Classification. In column 8, Roman numerals and letters characterize the classification of nebulae and other features. Diffuse nebulae are so diverse in their structure that it is difficult to speak of any kind of classification. However, nebulae exhibit some common characteristics, such as: the presence of filaments, the inclusion of dark matter, elongation, structure or amorphism, etc. Instead of long descriptions, it is better to give symbols, especially since some of them probably have a physical meaning. Unfortunately, due to the great diversity, we could not limit ourselves to a shorter classification. We have developed the following designations:

  1. Irregular, diffuse.
  2. Structured with individual parts.
  3. Nebulae with a known concentration of matter along the periphery in the form of a complete ring or part of it (peripheral).
  4. Filamentary: а - entirely filamentary, b - partially filamentary, c - including individual filaments.
  5. More regular spherical ones (more uniform in brightness or with a known gain towards the center).
  6. Very elongated nebulae.
  7. Nebulous stars or small nebulae ~ 1'*.
  8. Large fields of more or less uniform brightness.

* For these nebulae, a brightness of 7 is indicated for the center.

To indicate the inclusion of dark matter (nebulae, globules, dark filaments) the letter d is added to the classification. It seems difficult to indicate the relation of this conditional classification to other proposed classifications (although they have common ground).

Designations. The last column gives the designations of the nebulae: NGC, IC, our old numbers with the letter S (Simeis) in front [1, 2], W [4], Мi I and Мi II [6], Н [7, 8], МcD [9], Сеd [10], St [11]. A few remarks need to be made regarding our older notation. For example, according to IC, there is a round nebula and a cluster. But IC 1805 surrounded by a very large ellipse, and this part was designated as S3. In addition, in the vicinity there are several separate parts that have received separate designations. Another example is NGC 6604 (according to the description, NGC is a cluster, not a nebula). As for the nebula here, we have noted three formations of various kinds: Мi I8, S190 and S191 (№ 141 table 1). Sharpless gives only one number 41 and indicates an identification with NGC 6604.

Мi I8, S190 and S191 (№ 141 table 1). Sharpless gives only one number 41 and indicates an identification with NGC 6604.

In our previous lists, several old S numbers around 18h - 24° turned out to be fields of stars, S31, S121 are non-existent. A few small nebulae may be reflective or partially reflective. Several of the announced numbers we could later identify with other sources.

Exciting stars. Exciting stars can be classified in cases where the stars O, B0, B1 are more or less in the central region. In other cases, we face difficulties. Very often the stars O, B0, B1 are far from the center, on the edge of the nebula or even outside it, although close. The probability that there is only a random angular proximity on the image plane is small, and therefore, in this case, the vast majority of these stars are also exciting. It is quite difficult to solve the problem of exciting stars when the angular distance reaches 1° or more. At a distance of 1000 ps, 1° corresponds to 18 ps, and the nebula will still for the most part be in the sphere of ionization of O, B0 stars. However, the effect of random proximity already plays a significant role, and in this case exciting stars are indicated when there are grounds to believe that the star and the nebula are relatively close to us. Table 2 (p. 26) gives a list of nebulae for which exciting stars could be more or less confidently indicated. More questionable cases are marked with a colon. Only stars of class W, 0, B0, B1 and, in very rare cases, B2 are indicated. For these stars, the classification is taken from various sources (mainly Mount Wilson, Yerkes-MacDonald, Lick, Victoria). Of the objective prism class definitions, HD and HDE have been used almost exclusively. If there are many exciting stars, then sometimes only some are given. As can be seen, only approximately 54% of nebulae could be marked with exciting stars. However, this does not mean that the remaining nebulae (46%) do not have exciting stars. Firstly, we did not consider the B2-B5 stars, which could mistakenly be classified as too old. But it is even more probable that for many nebulae the exciting stars are fainter than 9.5, and few such B0 stars have been classified. If the nebula is located at a distance of 1500 is and the interstellar absorption is 3m, then the exciting star at 0 will be fainter than 9.5. Finally, in a considerable number of cases where the distance is less than 1 kpc, even at an angular distance of 1.5° the nebula will be in the sphere of ionization of O, B0 stars.

Star numbers less than 200,000 are HD, and more than 200,000 are HDE. Sources other than BD are: RVC [12], J-М [13], М [14], Hubble [15].

Images. In order to facilitate location of nebulae, we include table. 3, рage 29, containing links to various images. However, references could only be given for 154 numbers in table 1.

The symbols of the sources are the following:

  1. А: Atlas of diffuse gaseous nebulae [3].
  2. VI, VII, IX, X, XI: News publications of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory with indication of figure number [1, 2].
  3. AJ: Astronomical Journal.
  4. FR: Atlas of gas and dust Nebulae [16].

In addition, 8 sheets with images of nebulae are attached to this catalog, mainly for areas where nebulae are more crowded, such as in Cygnus. In table 3, they have designations, for example, f5-b, i.e. Fig. 5b.

A summary of all lists of nebulae into one general catalog was made after the death of V.F. Gaze. The work was carried out with the very active participation of E. I. Iosko and L. P. Metik.

Table 1 - Objects

In both the list of objects and in the object notes, designations from various other catalogs are included:

S = the Simeis designations from four earlier publications by Gaze & Shajn 1950IzKry…6….3S, 1951IzKry...7...93G, 1952IzKry...9...52G and 1954IzKry..11…39G.
W = Sharpless, the Sharpless 1 (Sh1-) catalog - 1953ApJ…118..362S
Мi I and Мi II = Minkowski - the Minkowski 1 1946PASP…58..305M and Minkowski 2 1947PASP…59..257M catalogs

Note that the Minkowski designations in the Gaze-Shajn catalog are not the currently used designations for Minkowski's objects. For example, Gaze-Shajn 187 is marked as MII11. This is not the planetary nebula Minkowski 2-11 (PK 356+04.1) in Ophiuchus, but is the eleventh object in Table II - "Diffuse Nebulae" in Minkowski's 1947 paper 1947PASP…59..257M: the emission nebula we know as Minkowski 2-67 in Cygnus. This correlates with Minkowski's note "in the area of No. 10 of O. Struve" that is identical to the designation used for Gaze-Shajn 187.

A similar identification was used by Elma Parsmian for Parsamian 20 that is the emission nebula Minkowski 1-85 and as such the fifth object in Table II - "Diffuse and Peculiar Nebulosities" in Minkowski's 1946 paper 1946PASP…58..305M. Parsamian noted: "listed as Minkowski M15".

Н = Bok, Bester, Wade - presumably 1953AJ…..58…36B and 1955HarRe.416….1B
МcD = Otto Struve, Elvey - 1938ApJ….88..364S, 1939ApJ….89..119S, 1939ApJ….89..517S, and 1939ApJ….90..301S
Сеd = Cederblad - 1946MeLuS.119….1C
St = Strohmeier - 1950ZA…..27…49S

A few Simeis designations re-veiled

Yes, that pun is intended.

Arguably one of the most beautiful objects in the northern skies: the supernova remnant we call the Veil Nebula. A plethora of nebulous filaments of which the majority appeared to lack formal designations. Until now.

Part of the Veil complex are five NGC objects and one IC object: NGC6960, NGC6974, NGC6974, NGC6992, NGC6995 and IC1340. Two supposed Simeis designations are well known, too: Simeis 3-188 for "Fleming's Triangle" and Simeis 3-210 for the "Eastern Arc" that visually involves the mag. 6.4 star SAO89241. Other filaments are designated by letters (Sky & Telescope 2011 and 2018) and some are only known by names.

The image below at left is from CSOG's 12-14" SNR guide for Cygnus. I observed many segments of the Veil using this image, as described in my blog for the observing run in the night of 8 October 2021 in Cornillac, France. The image to the right is image 7a in the Gaze-Shajn Catalog.

The information in the Gaze-Shajn catalog teaches us that a many of these segments actually do have formal designations:

  • Segment [L] - Simeis 247
  • Segment [G] - Simeis 246
  • Segment [M] - Simeis 239
  • Segment [F], northwest of NGC6979 - Simeis 237
  • Segment [O], that I designated myself - Simeis 233
  • "Fleming's Triangle" - not Simeis 3-188 but Simeis 229 (Gaze-Shajn 3-188)
  • Segment [E], to the west of "Fleming's Triangle" - Simeis 223
  • "the Funnel" - Simeis 232
  • "Gaze-Shajn 222", west of "the Funnel" - Simeis 225. The designation of Gaze-Shajn 222 for this segment is incorrect
  • "the Thin Thread" - Simeis 106
  • Segment [J] - Simeis 226 that together with the segment Simeis 224 to the northwest, forms Gaze-Shajn 222
  • Segment [I] - Simeis 231 & 235
  • Segment [C] and/or [D] - Simeis 230
  • The area near segment [B] carries two Simeis designations, too: Simeis 238 & 242
  • Simeis 3-210 is actually Simeis 249 (Gaze-Shajn 3-210)
  • Segment [K] - Simeis 245 and extending towards the south thereof, into the constellation of Vulpecula, a filamentary thread that is Simeis 243.
  • The "Southern Blowout Region" is Gaze-Shajn 5-228, consisting of Simeis 249, Simeis 245 and Simeis 243
  • Faint, filamentary nebulosity southwest of NGC6960 is Simeis 222

The up until now used designations of Simeis 3-188 for "Fleming's Triangle" and Simeis 3-210 for the "Eastern Arc" are the 188th and 210th entry, Simeis 229 and Simeis 249 respectively, in the earlier Gaze-Shajn paper 1952IzKry…9…52G. In my observing guides, I will use the designations Gaze-Shajn 3-188 and Gaze-Shajn 3-210 as object synonyms and I will do the same for every other Simeis object.

The Simeis designation for Veil Nebula segment NGC6794 on image 7a is illegible. The information in the earlier Gaze-Shajn paper 1952IzKry…9…52G makes it clear that this is Simeis 241 (Gaze-Shajn 3-202).

I will be updating the observing guides for the Veil Nebula in the next CSOG edition, along with many other guides and I will be changing quite a few object designations in my observing log, too.

Simeis statistics from the Gaze-Shajn catalog

The 5 Gaze-Shajn catalogs for Simeis objects, combined, contain 306 Simeis objects; Gaze-Shajn 258 is designated S306 in the table of objects and is the highest number of all the Simeis designations in the catalog.

2 Simeis objects, 31 & 121, are listed as non-existent and "several old S numbers around 18h - 24° turned out to be fields of stars".

4 Gaze-Shajn objects list a single Simeis object as a designation:

- Simeis 151 is used for both Gaze-Shajn 74 & 77
- Simeis 278 is used for both Gaze-Shajn 285 & 286

The note for Gaze-Shajn 82 states that a previous designation of Simeis 280 for this object was erroneous. In the catalog, Simeis 304 is listed as Gaze-Shajn 82.

70 Simeis objects are not listed as designations in the objects table, but are referred to in the objects notes and/or are annotated on the images. 34 of these are marked on the images, too. 3 Simeis designations can only be found on the images: 203, 276 & 227. That leaves 33 Simeis objects that are only referred to in the object notes and that are not included as individual objects in the 1955 catalog.

The note in SIMBAD "Sim 106, 302, 303, 304 are defined nowhere." is now partially outdated. Simeis 106 is "The Thin Thread" in the Veil Nebula as annotated on image 7a, Simeis 304 is Gaze-Shajn 82 as listed in the table of objects.

17 of the 306 (or more) Simeis objects can not be found in the 1955 Gaze-Shajn catalog, nor in the first Sharpless catalog 1953ApJ…118..362S. With the exception of Simeis 302 & 303, they are included in the earlier Gaze-Shajn papers.

Gaze-Shajn eulogy

Let me end by, posthumously, thanking Vera Gaze and Grigory Shajn for their fabulous catalogs. They have enriched our understanding and enjoyment of the nighttime sky and will continue to do so for generations, even if it had to wait for over 65 years before their catalogs became publicly available.
